Aquatic biomes can be divided into two major categories, freshwater and marine. There are transitional zones where the two meet, for example in estuaries, deltas, and lagoons)
In addition to freshwater and marine, there are also two major "vertical" aquatic biomes: the benthic or benthonic (the sandy, muddy, or rocky sea, river, or lake bottom) and the pelagic (the water column). These apply to both marine and freshwater.
Both are divided into various subcategories or zones, according to both depth and distance from the shore.
