Benthos

Benthos refers to the community of aquatic organisms (animals, plants, and microrganisms) that live on or in the substrate under bodies of water (the Benthic zone), and the associated habitats and ecosystems.

In marine ecosystems this refers to organisms on the sea floor (epiphytaand epifauna) or within the bottom sediments (infauna), as well as the general habitat of the sea floor.

In freshwater ecosystems, benthos refers to organisms and habitats of the bottoms of lakes, rivers, and creeks.
