As explained on the page for Avialae, different authors have disagreed significantly about the most appropriate usage for the formal taxon "Aves" (birds). The two most common usages are probably:
(1) For the clade of "birds" including the "Urvogel" Archaeopteryx and modern birds, as well as all fossil taxa generally described as "birds", see Avialae.
(2) For the crown clade of modern birds, including only those fossil birds that lie within the crown, see Aves (crown) (this taxon is also known as Neornithes).
