Cilium

Though often implied to be something different, the term "cilium" is essentially synonymous with "flagellum". Some authors have suggested the adoption of "cilium" for all eukaryotic flagella, to prevent confusion with the structurally quite distinct prokaryote flagella. The term "cilium" has traditionally been used for small, numerous flagella, such as in Ciliophora.
