Derived refers to members or sub-groups of a clade that diverged after other, basal taxa had already diverged. Derived taxa are distinguished in being more specialised and hence possessing synapomorphies lacking in more basal taxa. A synonym would be "advanced" but this is not often used because it might imply superiority.
