Enterobacteriaceae
From Palaeos.org
The Enterobacteriaceae is a family of generalist, facultatively anaerobic bacteria that is of particular significance to human interests. Many of the genera of Enterobacteriaceae will be familiar to the general public, and it is arguable that whenever someone refers to "germs", it is quite likely something like an enterobacterium they have in mind. Many of the Enterobacteriaceae are at least facultatively pathogenic - Yersinia pestis is the agent of bubonic plague, Shigella and Salmonella are well-known human pathogens, Erwinia contains species attacking plants. But there is one species in this family with a particular claim to fame - also a facultative pathogen, but generally a universal inhabitant of the human gut, Escherichia coli is arguably the most-studied organism on the planet, despite the unpronounceability of its name (which is why as E. coli it is also perhaps the only organism other than Tyrannosaurus rex widely recognised from its generic initial only). Almost all our knowledge of biochemistry derives ultimately from studies of this species.
