Epifauna are heterotrophic, benthic aquatic organisms (animals or protists) that live for some or all of their life cycle on the surface of sediments, mud, rock, shell, or other substrate. They may be attached or cemented to the bottom (sessile benthos) or mobile, crawling or moving from place to place in search of food (vagile benthos)
