Extinct refers to an organism, a species or other biological taxon that is no longer still living or current on the Earth today. It is the opposite of extant, which means "still existing".

Extinct species have undergone a very recent extinction, for example at the hands of man or as a side-effect of human activity, or disappeared at some time in the geological past. In this latter context, in biology and paleontology, the expression is commonly used to refer to or distinguish between living and fossil species.
