Hermaphrodite, her-maph’ro-dite, (from Hermaphroditus, a son of Hermes and Aphrodite who was united with the nymph Salmacis into a single, double-gendered creature), an organism in which the sexes are united in the same individual: the organism is both male and female.
Hermaphroditism, the condition of being a hermaphrodite. The condition is the norm in many species, and occurs as a pathology in others.
