A Heterotroph is an organism which obtains energy from the oxidation of organic matter. They must take in organic carbon in order to synthesize ATP.
Especially in regard to trophic levels, heterotrophs are called Consumers, because they are organisms that jave to consume other living or dead organisms, being unable to manufacture their own food
Consumers are divided into several levels.
- Primary consumers feed directly on the primary producers.
- Secondary consumers feed on lower-level consumers and sometimes on the producers.
Other classifications or subtypes of Consumers include categories like herbivores (including trophic groups such as browsers and grazers, carnivores, suspension feeders, and detritivores (feed on detritus).
