Homo sapiens is the species modern humans belong to. Recent populations are classified as the subspecies H. s. sapiens to distinguish from certain archaic, fossil, populations, such as H. s. idaltu. Homo sapiens first appeared around 200,000 years ago.

In Latin, homo sapiens means literally "wise human". Humans are intelligent but not necessarily wise. Human technology can change the human environment so fast that evolutionary change cannot keep up. Humans are causing problems for our descendants. Global warming is just one example. The problems are well known. We look for a solution.
