Meiosis
From Palaeos.org
A process common to almost all sexual reproduction in eukaryotic cells. The homologous chromosomes of a diploid nucleus first exchange homologous genes (alleles) on a roughly random basis, so that the resulting chromosomes carry a mixture of genes from each parent. The nucleus then divides normally (by mitosis) to yield two diploid daughter nuclei. Finally, the nuclei divide again, but now without DNA replication, to yield four haploid cells.
