The Paleogene Period of the Cenozoic Era: from 65.5 to 23.0 million years ago

The Paleogene is the first and much the longest period of the Cenozoic era. It sees a great radiation of therian mammals, who take over the niches vacated by the non-avian dinosaurs and the marine reptiles of the Mesozoic. It includes the Paleocene, Eocene, and Oligocene epochs. During the Paleogene period minor contiental drift occured and the contients assumed their present form.
