Photoautotrophs are a form of autotroph or primary producer that uses photosynthesis from sunlight as a source of energy for respiration and to fix organic carbon. Examples include the Cyanobacteria, photosynthetic eukarya, and green plants.
In the oceans, most primary productivity occurs in the photic zone through the action of phytoplankton. On land, embryophytes fill that role.
