Cladstic-based taxonomy

The following Polychaeta family cladistic analysis si again taken from the Polychaeta Higher Classification page, and is based on Rouse, G. W. and Fauchald, K. (1997) Cladistics and polychaetes. Zoologica Scripta 26(2):139-204. Here the Polychaeta comprises two clades, the Scolecida and Palpata. The latter consists of the clades Aciculata (including the the Phyllodocida and Eunicida) and Canalipalpata (which includes the Sabellida, Spionida, and Terebellida).

The Pogonophora are included as the Family Siboglinidae in the clade Sabellida. The family classification below also includes placement of 29 families excluded from the analysis.

TEREBELLIDA

Acrocirridae, Alvinellidae, Ampharetidae, Cirratulidae, Ctenodrilidae, Fauveliopsidae, Flabelligeridae, Pectinariidae, Poebiidae, Sternaspidae, Terebellidae, Trichobranchidae

Polygordiidae, Protodrilidae, Protodriloidae, Saccocirridae
Polychaeta incertae sedis:
Aeolosomatidae, Potamodrilidae, Parerogodrilidae,

Psammodrilidae

Rouse and Fauchald present the Polychaeta and Clitellata as sister clades. However a cladogram by McHugh 1994 showing the relationships between several Annelid taxa and Echiura and Pogonophra has the Polychaeta as paraphyletic and the Clitellata as highly derived. This is the interpretation followed here.
