Two modern genera in different kingdoms are known as Proteus:

(1) Proteus Hauser, 1885VP: A bacterial genus of the family Enterobacteriaceae in the Proteobacteria - see Proteus (bacterium).

(2) Proteus Laurenti, 1768: A troglobitic salamander - see Proteus (animal).
