Psathyrellaceae

Phylogenetic analysis of the large mushroom genus Coprinus (the inkcaps) showed it to be polyphyletic, with one small clade basal within the Agaricaceae, and the majority of species in an external clade (e. g., Hibbett & Binder 2002). Unfortunately, the type species of Coprinus, C. comatus, falls within the former small clade, meaning that most of the species assigned to Coprinus do not belong. Redhead et al. (2001) supplied many of the necessary reclassifications, moving the ex-Coprinus species to the new family Psathyrellaceae in the process.
