Recent

By "Recent" is meant contemporary, the present day, or thereabouts. So a species that has a stratigraphic range that extends to "Recent" is still extant.

Recent is here taken as coming after the historical period, which in turn comes after the prehistory of the earlier part of the Holocene.

The reason "recent" is given in the stratigraphic range is that there are many species that have become extinct even historically in the last few centuries, and more tragically even more recently, through human activities.
