Preliminary note on nomenclature: an epoch is a slice of time, a series a sequence of rock. The Cambrian Epoch 2 is thus the time when the Cambrian Series 2 was laid down. If and when the ICS gets around to formally naming this epoch and series we'll use that name whenever the reference is clear; until then we're stuck variously speaking of Epoch or Series 2.
Introduction
This epoch stretches from the first appearance of the trilobites to the end of the great archaeocyath reefs. It sees a great diversification of many kinds of metazoans - it's the chief segment of the "Cambrian explosion" - and ended with a profound faunal turnover, arguably a mass extinction. The Chengjiang and Sirius Passet lagerstätten date from this epoch.
