Superfamily

In Linnean taxonomy, superfamily refers to a rank above family but below order or suborder, representing a cluster of closely-related families. For zoological taxa, names of superfamilies end in the suffixes "-oidea" or "-acea" (NB. While "-oidea" is the suffix now mandated by the ICZN (see glossary at [1]), "-acea" was used in the past for many paleontologically significant groups). The superfamily rank does not appear to be used for botanical or bacteriological taxa.
