In the Linanean-based taxonomy, a "superphylum" is in the classification of the animal kingdom, a rank intermediate between Kingdom and Phylum, but closer to the latter than the former.
The rank of Superphylum has been applied to some of major groups of animals, e.g. Deuterostomia, Lophotrochozoa, etc, but has not been used a sconsistently as Phylum has.
