How do you get that little cross that means a taxon is extinct? I don't think I have that on my keyboard. (Bill 05:50, 29 September 2006 (PDT))

I just copy and paste from either Wikipedia or EvoWiki.--Stanton 06:17, 29 September 2006 (PDT)

Palaeos scheme on Wikipedia?

I'm thinking on drawing some little (carefully) interest from some wikipedians to Palaeos.org, so that this more important site gets some little more participants. One thing I did was creating the {{user:Rursus/Palaeos}} template on Wikipedia. You may of course use it too. rursus 07:59, 7 November 2006 (PST)

Great idea Rursus! I added one to my userpage there. M alan kazlev 14:13, 7 November 2006 (PST)

Individual Species

How should we do articles for individual species?--Stanton 12:36, 7 November 2006 (PST)

Well with brief pages it doesnt need any particular structure either than a template for the genus or family at the top of teh page. For a more detailed coverage, I suppose, as well as a general write up, there could be a listing giving info on the species.
On palaeo pages on Kheper I worked out a very detailed listing inspired by a popular article by Bob Bakker that appeared some years ago. I mentioned this on wikipedia (as an alternative to Kazvorpal's "palaeo boxes"), but didnt get any interest. Anyway for what it's worth I've copied that discussion (slightly edited) over to species format discussion. Also hacve added some additional comments M alan kazlev 14:13, 7 November 2006 (PST)
You don't suppose we would be allowed to start a blurb/stub for a page on a particular species or genus, then fill in the blanks and charts later? Writing up those phylogeny templates is very intimidating.--Stanton 09:25, 8 November 2006 (PST)
Well, that's all I've been doing. Christopher Taylor 08:35, 9 November 2006 (Dunedin)
AH... Ok then...--Stanton 12:14, 8 November 2006 (PST)
The best thing is for contributors to just do what they want and what they enjoy doing. Phylogenies and dendrograms, stubs, detaiuled write-ups, material copied from Palaeos com or from Wikipedia, it's all good :-) M alan kazlev 14:03, 9 November 2006 (PST)

Logo Kaput

I hate to sound needy, but, we are going to repair/restore the kafutzed logo, right?--Stanton 05:46, 10 November 2006 (PST)

what logo is this? The site's logo is working ok now (there were some technical problems with page editing and what not over the last few days). Or do you mean designing a new logo for palaeos org? M alan kazlev 12:42, 10 November 2006 (PST)

Horn Query For Tetraceratops

I've been doing a little research on Tetraceratops, the supposed "first theraspid," and there's an oft-quoted comment about it actually having 6 and not 4 horns... Yet, everyone draws it (everyone who does draw it, at least) with 4 horns... Do you happen to know, or know anyone who knows where the third pair of horns are?--Stanton 20:29, 11 January 2007 (PST)

Hi Stanton. I've got no idea. You can try asking on the Dinosaur Mailing List (if you are a member) M alan kazlev 00:43, 12 January 2007 (PST)

Concerning Christopher

Fang and I were wondering if we could get you to promote Christopher to sysop, also.--Stanton 05:26, 13 April 2007 (PDT)

Also

How do we install bugzilla into the site? Fang suggests that it will help put a speed bump in the imposter vandal's plans by preventing the creation of similar-sounding accounts.--Stanton 09:10, 3 April 2007 (PDT)

Another Thing For The ToDo List

When will you start transferring Amphiaspida and Heterostraca to the new site?--Stanton 21:23, 20 July 2007 (PDT)

hmm, yes you're right, we should transfer over all the agnath and placoderm pages at least. Okay, I'll try to do get some of this done in the next few days M alan kazlev 21:34, 20 July 2007 (PDT)

Account registration on palaeos

I don't think requiring registration to edit is a good idea because many spambots (such as XRumer)know how to get around this by creating accounts and some spambots on this wiki have already created usernames as shown here[1][2] [3]. I think installing a Spam blacklist like the one we have at EvoWiki and or CAPTCHA will work better because it will stop the spambots from ruining pages while still allowing good anonymous ips to edit.--Fang 23 15:57, 26 August 2007 (PDT)

hi Fang
Well, when it is all set up it will be a two part registration. Not only does someone have to register manually, but they should also send in a write-up, a short bio or something explaining their qualifications and why they would like to be a co-editor of Palaeos. Only then will they be given permission by an admin to edit.
As for anonymous ips, in all the timke Palaeos org has been up there have only been one or two edits by anonymous ip (the rest were the main editors forgetting to sign in). Also it's better if people are registered, since all editors should be accountable M alan kazlev 19:19, 27 August 2007 (PDT)

Some spambots (such as Xrumer) can send and have sent emails that ask permission to register. The Creation wiki had an email only registration system and the spambots (and the trolls and vandals) still managed to get in.--Fang 23 19:40, 27 August 2007 (PDT)

maybe a combination then - both registering and sending in a short bio, and also the spam-blockers used at evowiki M alan kazlev 20:48, 27 August 2007 (PDT)

Combining both the spam-blockers used at evowiki and registering and sending in a short bio sounds like a good idea even if it doesnt get rid of the spambots completely at least it will greatly reduce the amount of linkspam on this wiki.--Fang 23 15:17, 28 August 2007 (PDT)

Image

Is this map on the Eifelian epoch article at palaeos.com in the public domain or is licenced under a copy left licence? If it is i will want to upload it on EvoWiki and add it to the article on the Devonian period at EvoWiki which i am currently in the process of improving/expanding.--Fang 23 19:36, 12 September 2007 (PDT)

Another Sysop Recommendation

May I suggest that you promote Proxima Centauri to sysop?--Stanton 21:59, 23 September 2008 (PDT)

Sure, ask Paul, he does the admin stuff M alan kazlev 22:43, 23 September 2008 (PDT)
Yessir.--Stanton 11:54, 24 September 2008 (PDT)

Great!

The wiki's back. Proxima Centauri 09:14, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

Yes, it is  :-)
I've also updated material on the Permian and on Therapsida on Palaeos com, but a lot of work still needs to be done there. I'll try to do more there in the next few days or so M alan kazlev 05:56, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

Spam

We need a really good spam filter. Proxima Centauri 18:28, 21 November 2009 (UTC)

It's not may area of expertise unfortunately. You could contact Paul (the sysop guy), do you have his email? M alan kazlev 10:41, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

No, thanks for helping. Proxima Centauri 11:02, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

well i'm not sure if i have your email or not. but if you need me to give you Paul's email you can contact me at akazlev (at) bigpond (dot) com M alan kazlev 07:39, 23 November 2009 (UTC)

Suggested Promotion

Proxima and I wish to see User:Andreas promoted to rank of administrator first ensign in recognition for his fine service here.--Stanton 05:36, 8 December 2009 (UTC)

sure! M alan kazlev 02:39, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

Compliment returned

Thanks for the compliment, and to return the favor let me just say Palaeos.com is one of the best and most well constructed sites I've come across. I love the candor. As for copying my work back on to it, feel free. All I ask is the proper credit be given where appropreate.

Nautiloids seem to have become my area of "expertise" if you can call it that. However it's a constant run trying to keep up with the latest research. I'm now expanding into the ammonoids of which the museum has specimens from the Upper Cretaceous (presently I'm not involved with them) that aren't part of Rousseau Flower's Paleozoic fossil collection.

By the way, could you add my name to the regular contributors in Palaeos.org. .

Biographies and periods

I can't access various pages on scientists, such as the new one on William J. Sanders. Might the problem be with the periods in the links? Andreas 09:54, 3 January 2010 (UTC)

Hi Andreas, yeah i noticed the page isn't working - i'll write to Paul about it M alan kazlev 00:13, 5 January 2010 (UTC)
Thank you.
