Palaeos scheme on Wikipedia?

I'm thinking on drawing some little (carefully) interest from some wikipedians to Palaeos.org, so that this more important site gets some little more participants. One thing I did was creating the {{user:Rursus/Palaeos}} template on Wikipedia. You may of course use it too. rursus 08:02, 7 November 2006 (PST)

Thank you! Tell me more about the template, please.--Stanton 09:35, 7 November 2006 (PST)
In short: just insert {{user:Rursus/Palaeos}}, into Your user page in Wikipedia, if You have any such - otherwise ignore my blathering. It looks like the Wikipedia Rursus 6:th table row element at my Wikipedia User entry, or like:
Παλαιος This user is a member of the Palaeos.org crew.

in order to mystify the reader to wonder: "what is this Palaeos.org about? Best to click the link in order to learn!". Said rursus 12:13, 7 November 2006 (PST)

OOOOOH... That's how you do those things...--Stanton 12:30, 7 November 2006 (PST)

Note that Nomenclator Zoologicus doesn't cover fossil taxa as extensively as Recent taxa. It's still a very worthwhile resource.--Christopher Taylor 08:43, 23 January 2007 (Perth)

Should be deleted rather than protected? Mathmo 20:08, 22 March 2007 (PDT)

It was Fang's idea, as spambots would otherwise keep resurrecting that blasted page. --Stanton 20:16, 22 March 2007 (PDT)
Ah, I see now! Funny stuff, but I wonder how wikipedia deals with that? Mathmo 22:36, 23 March 2007 (PDT)
Took a quick look to check, it never has existed. [2] Mathmo 22:37, 23 March 2007 (PDT)
It never existed on wikipedia because spammers and spambots rarely make new articles solely for the purpose of spamming on wikipedia but instead usually add spam links to existing articles on wikipedia.--Fang 23 06:40, 24 March 2007 (PDT)
As someone who has trolled wikipedia, i can say this isnt usual spammer behavior, typicaly you grab a page you find funny for whatever reason, things like racist comments in say an article about immigration, or in the talk page of one, a good example can be found in the wikipedia page on stalin in the talk section, where one guy kept saying over and over how stalin was not a dictator, anyway you then spam the page with a catchphrase or something along those lines or butcher the article, now if you are just a random spammer and not a troll you hit random pages using the random page button adding things at random, usualy people just do that to try to avoid moderators. in any event i could probably tell you who was doing this, as a troll i know plenty of trolling communities, and if you guys are being hit id like to help protect this site from whoever is spamming it. so stanton please go to my talk page and discribe what happend. (from what im seeing elsewhere, it appears that these are coming from spammers either in wikipedia, or from a wikia community, as that is one of thier hallmarks, just random spamming) --Theburk(14:52, 27 March 2007)
I think it's a spambot, and not a troll, per se. Still, you don't suppose we could get your help in discouraging a troll that's been infesting EvoWiki?--Stanton 08:20, 27 March 2007 (PDT)

But however it did exist on this site and was deleted many times. [http://www.palaeos.org/Forums/%3Ftitle%3DForums/?title=Special:Log&page=Forums/%3Ftitle%3DForums/ --Fang 23 06:40, 24 March 2007 (PDT)

uncyclopedia

Does uncyclopedia really troll and vandalize wikis? If so for what reason?--Fang 23 13:52, 29 March 2007 (PDT)

No, I don't think so.

troll

It appears that the troll vandal you blocked is using a dynamic ip--Fang 23 11:29, 1 April 2007 (PDT)

can you report this user to their isp i cant report them now because my email isn’t working.--Fang 23 11:33, 1 April 2007 (PDT)

The pages Palaeos talk:Community Portal, Life and Cosmos have still not been restored - can you revert them to previous forms? Cheers.--Christopher Taylor 10:23, 2 April 207 (Perth)
Ditto Palaeos:Community Portal. Is there a way for me to directly revert edits or does one need to be an administrator to do this?--Christopher Taylor 10:40, 2 April 207 (Perth)
'Salright - I found the undo button on the history pages--Christopher Taylor 10:40, 2 April 207 (Perth)

Imposter-vandal!

I think i know a way to slow down the impostor vandal wikipedia has a program called bugzilla that restricts people who are not administrators from making accounts that are similar to existing accounts maybe we can install it to evo wiki and paleos.org.--Fang 23 10:06, 2 April 2007 (PDT)

So what are you waiting for? How do we install this bad boy?--Stanton 14:32, 2 April 2007 (PDT)
i don’t know but the instructions to install it might be on the site.--Fang 23 14:44, 2 April 2007 (PDT)

Fang 23 now a sysop

Thanks for the suggestion Stanton! Fang 23, you now have admin privelages  :-) M alan kazlev 03:07, 3 April 2007 (PDT)

213.5.xxx

It appears that vandalisms and trolling on paleos.org and Evo wiki caused by ip addresses in the 213.5.xxx range are actually all caused by the same person using a dynamic addresses because their edits such as these [3] [4][5][6] [7] [8] appear very similar and happen to belong to the same isp and also belong to the same country, city and physical location. a list of some of these ip addresses is shown below.

in evo wiki

and in paleos.org

and i have a way to stop this vandal and the 4.xxx vandal block all ip address beginning with 213.5 and block all ip addresses beginning with 4.xxx.--Fang 23 10:30, 7 April 2007 (PDT)

So, out with it, how do we stop them?--Stanton 14:40, 7 April 2007 (PDT)
we can just block all unused ip addresses in the 4.xxx and 213.5.xxx range individually by just blocking all possible ip addresses with combinations of numbers that begin with 213.5 or 4. like for example 213.5.69.5 ,213.5.896.1 ,4.255.9.88 or 4.168.225.8 but however it will take a long time (hours at the least days at the most) to block them all.--Fang 23 14:55, 7 April 2007 (PDT)

while the actual range of ips we need to block is 213.5.0.0-213.5.102.255'.--Fang 23 15:00, 7 April 2007 (PDT)

Want to start on it for now, then?--Stanton 15:22, 7 April 2007 (PDT)
yes but however it would also be worthwhile to find an easier way like installing a program that lets us block whole ip ranges uncyclopedia and wikipedia are able to block whole ip ranges and they may have a program like that that we can install.--Fang 23 15:29, 7 April 2007 (PDT)

christopher

do you think we should give christopher admin privileges he has made a lot of helpful edits.--Fang 23 16:47, 12 April 2007 (PDT)

Definently! I've always wondered why he wasn't one already, in fact.--Stanton 20:55, 12 April 2007 (PDT)
so how do we change his status to syops or administrator? And if we cant do it do you know who can?--Fang 23 23:37, 12 April 2007 (PDT)

[9]--Stanton 05:28, 13 April 2007 (PDT)

done! M alan kazlev 21:05, 13 April 2007 (PDT)

Evo wiki bug

Recently when i have been trying to go to EvoWiki a computer bug has been stopping me from getting into EvoWiki I think the problem is with evo wiki and not my computer because I’ve attempted to use other computers to try to get on EvoWiki and the same bug appeared on the other computers as well. The text that appears when the error happens looks like this

Database error A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was: (SQL query hidden) from within function "MediaWikiBagOStuff::_doquery". MySQL returned error "1016: Can't open file: 'objectcache.MYI' (errno: 145) (localhost)".

Do you know how to fix it and if you don’t know how to fix it does stiensky or someone else know how to fix it?--Fang 23 16:57, 22 May 2007 (PDT)

I have no idea how to fix it, as you must remember that my programming skills are minimal. All I know is that the bug has been with us for some time, and now it's reached critical. I think Steinsky is working on it... Maybe we should ask him on Wikipedia?--Stanton 18:27, 22 May 2007 (PDT)

ok i will ask steinsky--Fang 23 11:30, 23 May 2007 (PDT)

Proxima Centauri is now SysOp

Thanks for the recommendation! User:Paul 20:30, 24 Sep 2008 (BST)

I've blocked Grawp yet again. I've also protected many pages against Page move vandalism. How likely is it that biologists and paleontologists will have legitimate reasons to move these pages? If a user who isn't a sysop has a legitimate reason to move a page he/she will have to ask a sysop. Do you want me to continue with this? Proxima Centauri 10:05, 11 October 2008 (PDT)
How many articles are there? Proxima Centauri 08:23, 12 October 2008 (PDT)
Something is slowing this computer down. It's speeded up again now. I suppose things are OK. If it isn't please tell me.Proxima Centauri 02:16, 14 October 2008 (PDT)

It’s getting steadily more difficult to find unprotected pages. I’ve added a new page about this, Page move. Page move vandals will be frustrated looking for pages to move. I can track down unprotected pages because my computer indicates that I haven’t accessed them yet. Vandals can’t track them down that way.

I think I Can slow down now. Ten to thirty protected pages a day should be enough together with new pages. Proxima Centauri 08:03, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

Certainly you've put in an impressive effort. Thank you very much.--Christopher 08:48, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

Page protection

Do all these pages need full protection? I don't want to unprotect them without knowing why it was done. Proxima Centauri 09:54, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

Check if they have "move only by sysops" or not, already. If they don't, adjust them, if they already do, then no need to.--Stanton 14:21, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
