Ventral is from the Latin venter, the belly. It refers to the lower surface or side of the body of a bilaterian animal, which faces downwards when it is swimming, crawling, walking, or flying.

In a bivalve shell "ventral" refers to the shell ege or margin furthest from the hinge and opposite the umbonnes.

Ventral is the opposed to dorsal
