The name Neozygomycetia was coined by Cavalier-Smith (1998) to refer to a supposed superclass of fungi including the Zygomycetes (containing Mucoromycetidae and Meromycetidae) and Zoomycetes (including Entomycetidae, Trichomycetes and Laboulbeniomycetes). The group was diagnosed by the absence of sporocarp and centrioles and production of aerial or aquatic aplanospores.
Recognition of the group by other authors has been minimal, and in the analysis by James et al. (2006) the "Neozygomycetia" of Cavalier-Smith was resolved as polyphyletic, with most members scattered among the basal fungi while the Laboulbeniomycetes belong within the ascomycetes.
