The Coleoidea has been divided into two principle groups. infraclasses or superorders, the Belemnoidea and Neocoleoidea. Recent coleoids are Neocoloidea and are further divided into the ten armed Decapodiformes which includes squids, octopods, cuttle-fishes, and Spirula, and the eight armed Octopodiformes, octopuses.
