The Goniatitida are divided into two suborders, the Tornoceratina and the Goniatitina which represent the two main evolutionary groups within the order shown in the Treatise (Part L). GONIAT online, shows six superfamilies in the Tornoceratina and 16 within the Goniatitina.

Phylogeny in the Treatise -1957
-
Note that in the GONIAT website, superfamilies end in --oidea, conforming with the recent ICZN ruling on superfamily names necessitating taxonomic rank be specified. Previously in invertebrate paleontology names ending in --oidea were limited (mostly) to subclasses and superorders and --aceae was universally used for superfamilies, eleminating the need to specify rank. Most recent taxonomies and revisions have adopted the ICZN ruling (recommondation?)

The Treatise Part L, 1957, indicates in fig. 12, Phylogeny of Paleozoic Ammonoids, two primary lineages stemming from the Tornoceratidae; 1. the Tornoceratid, beginning with the Tornoceratidae and 2. the Goniatitid, beginning with the Goniatitidae. The Tornoceratidae, accordingly, gave rise to the Cheiloceratidae from which the  Agathiceratidae, followed by the Shumartitidae, Popanoceratidae, Perrinideae and Cyclolobiidae are subsequently derived.  The Goniatitidae, which seems to have its origin the the Cheiloceratidae  gave rise to the Neoicoceratidae and Schistoceratidae which are followed by the Metalegoceratidae and Adrianitidae, and also gave rise to the Dimorphoceratidae which in turn gave rise to the Thalassoceratidae.

The Tornoceratidae and Cheiloceratidae are combined in the the Cheilocerataceae, the Agathiceratidae, Shumarditidae, and Perrinitidae in the Agathicerataceae; and the Popanoceratidae and Cylolobiidae in the Cyclolobaceae. The three superfamilies were the original Tornoceratina.

The Goniatitidae, with subfamilies, Neoicoceratidae, Metalegoceratidae and Schistoceratidae are combined in the Goniatitaceae; the Adrianitidae as its own superfamily, Adrianitaceae; the Dimophoceratidae and Thalassoceratidae in the Dimorphocerataceae.  These three superfamilies were the original Goniatitina.
