Microfossils are small fossils. For practical purposes, the cut-off may be defined in terms of how they are studied; microfossils require a microscope, larger fossils (sometimes known as macrofossils) can be studied with the naked eye or low-powered optical aids such as a hand lens.

Fossils of microorganisms are invariably microfossils, but not necessarily vice versa - a fossil mite would be a microfossil, but the live mite wouldn't be considered a microorganism.
