The Nimravidae ("Ancestors of (King) Nimrod (The Hunter)")is a family of extinct carnivores, many genera of which bore a strong resemblance to the sabertoothed tigers.  The nimravids diverged from the felids during the early Eocene, and would spread from North America and Eurasia, and eventually become extinct near the end of the Miocene, possibly due to climatic changes and competition from true cats, true sabertooths, and canids.
