Ophthalmosauria

Contents

Introduction

The Ophthalmosauria (“eye lizard”) are a clade of highly derived thunnosaurian ichthyosaurs that lived from the Middle Jurassic to the Middle Cretaceous period. The name refers to the proportionally extremely large eyes in the typical Jurassic genus Ophthalmosaurus.

Ophthalmosaurs varied quite a bit in shape, with some like Ophthalmosaurus having perhaps the most streamlined form of all the ichthyosaurs, being a tear-drop shape, and short circular flippers. Others like the Cretaceous Platypterygius were more elongate (more like basal Parvipelvia) with longer and narrower flippers. These animals were about 4 to 5 meters long, and had a cosmopolitan distribution.

In the Linnaean system of classification, Ophthalmosaurs are refered to the family Ophthalmosauridae.
