The Tarphycerida contains 10 families, 11 if the Bickmoritidae are separated from the Barranceratidae in the suborder Barrandeocerina. The Lituitidae, which had been moved back and forth between the older Tarphycerida and Barrandeocerida, is now included in with the orthocerids.

For the Tarphyceratidae, Estonioceratidae, Trocholitidae, and Ophidioceratidae that made up the original Tarphycerida, see [[Tarphycerin Families]]. For  the families included in the original Barrandeocerida, beginning with the Barrandeoceratidae and Plectoceratidae, see [[Barrandeocerine Families]]

The Tarphycerida revised contains 11 families, five in the suborder [[Tarphycerina]] and six in the doubtful suborder [[Barrandeocerina]], 12 if the Bickmoritidae are separated from the Barranceratidae.  The [[Lituitidae]] are returned to the Tarphycerida.

The Barrandeocerina is of doubtful validity because it appears to be polyphyletic, with at least two phylogenetic lineages derived at different times from different [[Tarphyceratidae]]

The Tarphycerina contains the Tarphyceratidae, Estonioceratidae, Trocholitidae, Ophidioceratidae, and Lituitidae. The Barrandeocerina contains two lineages beginning with the Barrandeoceratidae and Plectoceratidae, which might be considered at superfamilies.
